🔗 This film is part of my Bronze Age series - from smelting raw ore to casting finished weapons. Explore the full journey from ore to weapon here: • Bronze Age - From Ore to Weapon Curious where this copper came from and the landscapes that shaped it? Explore Ancient Landscapes here: • Ancient Landscapes - Prehistoric Sites & M... The Great Orme in North Wales is home to the largest Bronze Age copper mine discovered in Europe. In this film, I explore the ancient tunnels where malachite was once extracted before recreating the process of Bronze Age copper smelting and casting. Working underground with primitive tools, I extract malachite from the rock face before building a traditional smelting pit using clay, grog, and organic material. Flint and marcasite are used to spark the fire, charcoal is added, and the crushed ore begins its transformation. With the addition of cassiterite, molten bronze is formed and poured into a stone mould to create a Bronze Age axe. This is experimental archaeology in action - a journey from raw ore to finished tool, revealing the ingenuity and intelligence of the ancient world.
