This Cloud State of Play segment discusses the McKinsey Report on "open source ai" in the era of "genai", clarifying the focus on open-source generative AI models themselves, not AI-generated open-source content. We explore this important distinction for understanding "artificial intelligence" and how "open-source tools" are shaping "ai development" today. Tune in for the latest "ai news" and insights. #genai #aiml #opensource #mckinsey #cloudnative #cloudtherapist #unfiltered #cloudstateofplay Taken from the May 2025 episode of Cloud State Of Play. McKinsey Report - Open Source Technology In The Age Of GenAI https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/mcki... The Open Source community has finally made itself relevant again, by hogging and cornering the GenAI model development and infra market. A year ago when I attended SOOCon24, they were in sheer panic! Now, they are all happy and smiles because they have found a niche for themselves...pathetic! From the shill channels to the influencers to the desperate vendors and CNCF communities. They are all breathing a sigh of relief, as they get their feet under the table, in the GenAI open source space! Highlights 🧩 Over 50% of organizations regularly use open source AI tools, especially in AI models, data, and developer tools. 🚀 Experienced AI developers are 40% more likely to use and benefit from open source AI than less experienced peers. 💰 Open source AI provides significant cost savings on implementation (60%) and maintenance (46%) compared to proprietary AI. 🔐 Security, regulatory compliance, and IP risks remain top concerns, prompting enterprises to adopt guardrails and robust cybersecurity measures. 🌍 Technology, media, and telecom sectors, along with countries like the U.S., UK, and India, lead open source AI adoption. 🌱 Despite high usage, only 13% of respondents actively contribute to open source AI projects, reflecting a participation gap. ⚖️ Hybrid AI tech stacks combining open source and proprietary solutions are preferred for balancing cost, security, and time to value. === Thanks to Paul Bevan, for his insights.
