I’ve been skiing in Austria since I was a child, and Bad Gastein is one of those places I keep coming back to. I was here again recently, and this updated guide includes new footage and a longer look at both the skiing and the town itself. The skiing here is part of the huge Ski Amadé region, linking Bad Gastein with Bad Hofgastein, Sportgastein and Dorfgastein, and even across the ridge to Grossarl. From long classics like Hohe Scharte, to the high slopes of Sportgastein, and quieter runs around Angertal and Dorfgastein, this is an area where you can ski for days without repeating the same slopes. Bad Gastein is also known for its dramatic setting and historic hotels. The town is built vertically into the mountainside, with buildings dating back to the 19th century and a powerful waterfall running straight through the centre. It has a real mountain atmosphere that sets it apart from more modern ski resorts. In this guide I share personal tips on my favourite runs, how the different parts of the ski area connect, places to eat, and practical details on getting to Bad Gastein by train from Salzburg. I also spend more time walking through the town, showing why it is a place worth exploring even when you are not skiing. Whether you visit in winter for skiing, or in summer for hiking and mountain views, Bad Gastein has a character that is hard to forget.
