The K9 Thunder is a South Korean 155 mm self-propelled howitzer designed and developed by Hanwha Techwin. The howitzer is designed to provide effective and deep fire support. The main armament is a CN98 155 mm 52 caliber artillery gun and has a maximum firing range of 40 km using high explosive ammunition. K9 is welded with 20 tonnes armour steel which can withstand explosion pressure and fragments from 155 mm high explosive rounds. The K9 Thunder is powered by a 1,000hp, water-cooled diesel engine that provides a top speed of over 67km/hour and a cruising range of 360km. The vehicle can shoot-and-scoot by ready to fire in 30 seconds when stationary or 1 minute during the move, then relocated to a different position in 30 seconds to increase survivability from enemy counter-battery attacks. After satisfactory performance at high altitude terrain, the Ministry of Defence is getting ready to place a repeat order of 200 K9 Vajra-T worth ₹10,000 crores. The new order could be placed at the defence Expo 2020 and the delivery will start by 2023 and all deliveries will be completed before 2028.
