Flights RACK41 & BONE21 of the 494th Fighter Squadron based at RAF Lakenheath enter Holbeach AWR each armed with BDU-50 training bombs. Each run of the F-15E Strike Eagles release all four for their BDU-50s on their target. For the more broader battlefield combat scenario, the F-15s were assisted with a JTAC to give coordinates to the F-15s. Techniques for bombing were LABS, Toss (Loft) bombing, where speed is used and a pull up from the aircraft. There were a variety of techniques used which were all excellent. The BDU-50 is unguided, but the pilot ‘is’ guided. The pilot will key in the coordinates and the HUD will show where the pilot needs to release the ordnance, whether automatic or manually released. The BDU-50 bombs, are inert 500lb training bomb to mimic a live Mk 82 bomb OR the weight of a matching ordnance. The BDU-50 is a non explosive training shape used to provide combat air forces with aircrew weapons delivery training. combination of concrete, vermiculite and sand. JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) A JTAC is a military specialist who directs the actions of combat aircraft in CAS (close air support) and other offensive operations from a forward position. CAS is life saving and support the troops on the ground by sending an aerial strike by giving coordinates to attack aircraft, assets, vehicles, tanks and accurate fire power from air support for ground forces.
