The VW Golf R 20 Years is a 328bhp hot hatch that is both the most powerful and the most expensive production Golf there's ever been. As the name suggests, it has been launched to mark 20 years since the original Golf R – the Mk4-based R32 – blasted on to the scene. Since then we've also seen R versions of the Mk5, Mk6, Mk7 and now Mk8 Golf, each of which has upped the ante when it comes to performance. The Golf R 20 Years is designed to be the pinnacle of the fast Golf format, and like its predecessors uses four-wheel drive to put it power to the road. Over the specification of a standard Golf R, the 20 Years features the Performance Pack as standard complete with its larger rear spoiler, additional driving modes and a top speed increased to 168mph. There's also bespoke 20 Year badging on the b-pillar, a slice of real carbon-fibre trim for the interior, 19-inch Estoril wheels, and the option of Lapiz blue detailing on the wheels and door mirror casings. The result is a Golf that costs £48,250 before any options are added, and thus quite easily £50,000 by the time you've chosen some extras such as the DCC adaptive damping. Could a Golf ever really be worth that? In this night-themed CarGurus UK review, Chris Knapman asks exactly that question. The answer might just surprise you. Written review: https://www.cargurus.co.uk/research/V... Pros Desirable image Great to drive Comfortable ride Cons Fiddly infotainment system Rivals offer more interior space Not significantly better than a Mk7 Golf The CarGurus verdict Despite all VW’s talk of this being the ‘digital Golf’ and that swanky, eye-catching cabin, the Mk8 doesn’t do much, if anything, that the brilliant Mk7 didn’t. It does have more assistance technology than before and the pair of digital displays make the dashboard look crisper and more modern than the old car’s, but buyers might find the new touch-sensitive slider controls more fiddly to use than physical knobs and buttons when on the move. The Mk8 Golf is no more spacious than before and nor is it significantly more fuel efficient. It isn’t any better to drive, either, although the Mk7 performed so well in that regard that by simply matching it, the Mk8 becomes one of the best handling and riding cars of its type. When all’s said and done, the Golf is still one of the best family hatchbacks you can buy. The difference is that rivals are much closer than they once were.
