This video explores Expressionism, a 20th Century Art Movement that originated in Germany. Expressionists broke free from the constraints of Impressionism. Expressionists were not satisfies with just depicting the external world, but instead wanted to express the inner turmoil and emotions of the human condition. It was a radical departure from the art of the time. The artists depicted the inner struggles of the modern individual. This video explores the Expressionist Groups Die Brucke- The Bridge, and Der Blaue Reiter- The Blue Rider. Expressionist artists abandoned the pursuit of realistic representation in favor of distorted forms, jarring colors, and a raw and primal energy. The artists wanted to capture the essence of human experience in its rawest form. Expressionism was a reaction to Industrialization and War. Expressionists were influenced by the Post Impressionists (Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne), and the desire to move beyond the purely visual. The video explores the art of Kandinsky, Munch, Marc, Kokoshka, Kollwitz, Heckel, Bleyl, Kirchner, Nolde, Rottluff, and Pechstein. Expressionist art influenced later Art Movements like Abstract Expressionism (Action and Color Field), Neo-Expressionism, and Contemporary Street art and Mural Painting. Edvard Munch was a precursor to the Expressionist Movement. His most well known for his Expressionist painting, The Scream. His paintings have figures that show despair, isolation, and angst, with an emotional impact. His paintings tap into anxiety in a rapidly changing world. In Munich, The Blue Rider was formed. Some major artists were Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. They believed in spirituality in art, through color. Some of the paintings are abstract. The Bridge emerged in Dresden, with the artists Kirchner, Heckel, Bleyl, Rottluff, Nolde and Pechstein. Their art had a primitive energy reflecting anxiety and alienation of urban life. This video is a brief introduction to the Expressionist Art Movement, what it emerged from, and what it influenced in later art.
