St Andrew's Primary School Unveil New Classrooms in Cullompton

A major £1.5 million development at a Cullompton primary school is already helping to transform teaching and learning. The project, at St Andrew’s Primary School, has been completed in five stages over three years. The school has been comprehensively re-modelled with extra classrooms, a dance and drama studio, remodelled PE, dining and library facilities and new offices. It will now be able to accommodate up to 420 children and is growing to meet the extra demand for places from new housing development in the town. Some of the new facilities will also be available for community use. The development has been paid for by Devon County Council and was officially opened on Friday July 6 by Professor of Education Mick Waters, who was Director of Curriculum at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and has a close association with St Andrew’s. Mr Waters said: “Where we learn really matters. If you’re in a classroom that makes you think and wonder and gets you involved in learning, you’re bound to be sucked into learning. “This school has got every opportunity. The way the place has shaped and developed opens opportunities for children’s learning. Of course it’s the teachers who take that forward, they are the ones who can use the space and building in the best possible way to make learning come alive for children. The way in which teachers use the space, is as important as the space itself. This is a brilliant place, but you need brilliant teachers, and think they have them here as well.” Mr Waters said he had been honoured to visit the school and officially open the new building. He added: “It’s great to be part of a celebration and achievement. I came to the school a little while ago and thought if the new part would be as good as everybody hoped and today I’ve been outstanding the quality of the building and the way it’s being used. The parents and community have real pride in where their children are going to school.” Helen Nicholls has been leading the project on behalf of the Ventrus Multi-Academy Trust. She said the school needed to grow by two classes and that the challenge was to removal the building and extend it. She said: “It is an inspirational building that is already transforming teaching and learning. “We have re-modelled and extended the school and the new spaces we have are completely fit for purpose. “A team of committed volunteers has helped give the school a major facelift with decorating and joinery and this meant we were able to spend all our budget on the buildings.” Headteacher Leanne Arrowsmith said: “Local people have been so supportive during the building work and I hope they now feel they have a school which is truly a part of the community with facilities for them to use. “The children have absolutely loved the project they have really enjoyed seeing the building come out of the ground, they have helped move furniture, so we could work around the spaces and their faces on the first day of school when they saw their new building were just spectacular. “They couldn’t believe that this was all for them and they really appreciate it and it’s made a difference to their learning attitudes which are now fantastic in the school. “We will continue building on top of what we have got. The school has lots of potential it’s come on a really long journey, the building is just the beginning, the pupils and learning are fantastic and we hope to make these children’s dreams a reality now.”
