My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Makassarese Language. Makassarese Language: Makassarese (also spelled Makasar or Makassarnese) is an Austronesian language spoken primarily in the southern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia, especially in and around the city of Makassar. It is closely related to Buginese and other South Sulawesi languages. Makassarese features a rich system of verbal affixes and politeness levels that reflect social hierarchy and cultural norms. While historically written in the traditional Lontara script, today it is mostly written using the Latin alphabet. Though Indonesian dominates public life, Makassarese remains a vital marker of identity in local communities. Makassarese People and Culture: The Makassarese are an ethnic group indigenous to South Sulawesi, known for their long maritime history, trading networks, and the powerful Sultanate of Gowa in the 16th–17th centuries. Their culture places high value on honor, social rank, and adat (customary law), with traditional houses and colorful rituals for life events like weddings and funerals. Islam plays a central role in their spiritual life, blending with older animist practices. Makassarese cuisine, such as coto Makassar and pallubasa, reflects a bold, savory flavor profile. Seafaring, craftsmanship, and strong community ties remain important aspects of their identity. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes.
