A playthrough of Sega's 1998 arcade racing game for the Sega Saturn, Power Drift. This video shows playing through the arcade mode on the default difficulty level. Then, I play the Grandprix mode (begins at 7:46). I unlocked the extra stages so that you can see the special bonus vehicles. This Saturn port was only released in Japan, and was part of the Sega Ages series of arcade ports that spanned the Saturn, Dreamcast, and PS2. The great majority of text is in English, making it an ideal prospect for importing. It plays perfectly on a US Saturn using an Action Replay cart. Sega AM2 is quite famous for their arcade work from the late-80s through the late-90s. Their use of cutting age hardware and creative approaches to design allowed them to do things people had never dreamt were possible at the time. Out Run, Space Harrier, After Burner, Galaxy Force - it's hard to find a team with a bigger list of hits behind them than the Sega development house headed up by Mr. Yu Suzuki himself. Power Drift was one of the earlier titles that used the so-called "super scalar" technology - that is, the use of 2D sprites, scaled in real-time, with the intention of creating a 3D space. As anyone that has ever sat down in a Sega arcade-machine and experienced the tech at work can tell you, it looks awesome. It doesn't look *real*, per se, but it gives an absolute feeling of depth and speed that real-time polygons couldn't touch with the processing power available. Power Drift is one of the games produced during this time that hasn't received anywhere near the attention over the years as the heavy-hitters (how many variations of Hang On did we see?). It received a port to the PC Engine at the time, and later on this version and the Dreamcast port were released, but we never received a console-port in the US. If you have a 3DS, though, you have access to a US-released arcade-perfect version! It's a racing game, but it couldn't be more different from OutRun if it tried. Rather than keeping you on the ground, Power Drift gives you races that occupy multiple vertical layers - you might go over something resembling an interchange clover-leaf, only to find yourself racing directly beneath it parallel to a river five seconds later. It's incredibly fast, colorful, and smooth - it probably could also be quite overwhelming if you aren't expecting it. The arcade game was quite an achievement in 1988 when it was first released. It ran at a blazing 60 fps (!!!), and between the camera fly-bys of the track, the spin-outs after an accident, and the car that you would sit in to play bouncing around on hydralics, you'd be probably A) Stunned at what games could do, B) Holding back vomit, or C) All of the above, though somehow still enjoying it. And the super-awesome news here - the Saturn version is almost arcade-perfect. The only notable difference is the frame-rate: the arcade runs at a locked 60fps, and the Saturn version is running at 30fps. It doesn't really impact the game much at all, though - it's still super smooth and lightning fast, and just as much fun to play as it ever was. So is it worth your time? Well, if you like fun, then yes. Yes, it is. ______ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
