Birds | Animal Classification

Future Zoologist Academy is a virtual zoology and ecology program for kids who love animals. Explore the complete Birds lesson using the link below. https://futurezoologistacademy.com/le... -------- Birds are an amazing group of animals because regardless of where you are in the world, odds are you will see a bird! They are a huge and diverse group. Scientists estimate that there are more than 10,000 species of birds, more than double the number of mammals that exist. Some scientists even think there are more than 15,000 species! That is what is so fun about science, we are always learning and new information is always being discovered, so we must be willing to accept change and new facts. Because the bird group is so large, birds can be very different from one another. One of the biggest differences is how birds move around. Most birds fly, like a bald eagle, others swim, like a penguin, and others don’t swim or fly! Animals like an ostrich spend their whole lives on the ground. Birds can also have very different colors and patterns, even birds of the same species can look different. Most people picture a red bird when the think of a cardinal, but only the males are red! Perhaps the most obvious difference between birds is their size and shape. Some birds are small and quick like a hummingbird, others are round and plump like a chicken or tall and wide like a cassowary. With all these differences, what could these animals have in common? All birds have feathers! Feathers are made of keratin, the same thing as your hair and fingernails. They will use their feathers for a wide variety of things. Birds like a seagull use their dense, aerodynamic feathers to fly. Semi-aquatic birds, like a pelican, coat their feathers in an oil to help them stay waterproofed. Feathers can also be used to keep birds like vultures warm or even to attract a mate, like a peacock! Most birds have feathers covering their whole bodies, including their wings! Wings are often used to fly, but they can also be used more as a flipper, like with the penguin. For some birds, it would seem wings are just for decoration. The emu and the ostrich use their small, weak wings to balance while running or in a dance to attract a mate. Their wings are not strong enough to lift their massive bodies. You can tell a lot about the way a bird moves by its wings and a lot about what it eats with its bill or beak. The shape and size of a bird’s beak/bill can give us an idea about their diet. Meat eaters, like hawks, use their beak like a fork and knife to tear off small pieces. Filter feeders, like flamingos, have specially designed bills to filter out algae and small crustaceans. Herons, egrets, and many other fish eating species have a long, pointed bill which allows them to pick fish from shallow water with ease! Another amazing thing that birds have in common is that they all lay eggs! Eggs are laid in a nest which can be in a tree branch or cavity, on a ledge or cliff, in or under man made structures, or even in the middle of an open field. After mom lays her eggs, they must be kept warm by either mom or dad sitting on them. We call this incubation. After awhile, the eggs hatch and baby birds, or chicks, emerge! Some chicks, like quail, are ready to go right awhile while other birds, like a robin, need mom and dad to feed them in the nest for awhile. While birds may be a very diverse group of animals, they are more alike than you’d think! This video is geared towards grades K-5.
