Did you know that some sea turtles can live to be over 100 years old? Despite their long lives, many species are facing serious population declines due to human activities. Sea turtles are amazing creatures with a wide variety of species found all around the world. They inhabit oceans from the tropical waters of the Caribbean to the chilly coasts of the Arctic. Sea turtles are facing many threats from human activities that have put their survival at risk. They are marine reptiles with streamlined bodies and large flippers that are well-adapted to life in the ocean. Over the last 200 years, human activities have tipped the scales against the survival of these ancient mariners. Slaughtered for their eggs, meat, skin, and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation. They also face habitat destruction and accidental capture—known as bycatch—in fishing gear. Seven different species of sea turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle and the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. While these highly migratory species periodically come ashore to either bask or nest, sea turtles spend the bulk of their lives in the ocean. Recently, while we were snorkeling, we encountered a beautiful sea turtle with a broken shell. We assume the turtle's shell was broken due to vessel strikes or maybe another reason. It is pathetic to see sea animals are facing many threats due to humans’ unethical activities and lack of caring for nature. We should take care of the ancient mariners. They are an important part of the ecosystem. The threats facing sea turtles are vast, but so are the efforts to protect them. Individuals can help by reducing plastic use, participating in clean-up initiatives, and supporting conservation organizations. Remember, every small action counts towards safeguarding these majestic creatures for future generations.
