Dedicated to the memory of Dame Patricia Routledge, a resident of Chichester, who died on Friday. The audio you hear in this compilation was recorded during a quarter peal which I arranged to mark her 96th birthday earlier this year, which she came to listen to. Dame Patricia's career spanned more than 73 years on stage and screen. Her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket in 'Keeping Up Appearances' and Hetty Wainthropp in 'Hetty Wainthropp Investigates', made her a national treasure and shaped British television history. The music at the beginning of the video is the theme tune from 'Keeping Up Appearances'. The detached campanile at Chichester holds a ring of eight bells, and an hour bell (the central tower holding a single service bell cast in c1399 by William Dawe). The treble and tenor were cast by Richard Phelps in 1729 and 1706 respectively. The 2nd was recast in 1961 by John Taylor & Co, coinciding with a major overhaul and rehang of the peal. The 3rd and 7th were cast by John Wallis, in 1583 and 1587. The 4th was cast in 1674 by William I Eldridge. The 5th and 6th were cast in 1665 by William III Purdue. Bells 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are all subject to a preservation order. The canons have been removed from the treble, 7th and tenor. The 2nd was cast with a flat top and the other bells all retain their canons within canon-retaining headstocks. All eight bells hang in an oak frame, constructed in 1731 by Richard Goodman. The tenor of the ringing peal weighs 18-1-12cwt and is tuned to Eb. The hour bell, which hangs beside the ringing peal, weighs 73cwt and is tuned to 'Bb'. It was cast in 1877 by John Taylor & Co. 8 bells, 18-1-12cwt in Eb.
