After her dramatic day on yesterday’s leg of The Great Britain XII, 46233 Duchess of Sutherland is to head the Day 3 leg towards The Welsh Marches from Taunton to Shrewsbury and Preston. The highlights of the day was the climbs up Filton and Llanvihangel which were two of my primary shots to get of her. With a good load behind her, the scenes should be amazing and thankfully it was. The weather was a mixture of sun and cloud with the Filton shot being sunnier than Llanvihangel. The first shot was filmed at a road bridge on Constable Road up the 1 in 75 climb up Filton Bank towards the summit at Filton Abbey Wood Station. With the tracks recently back to a 4 track layout just like the old days, it was fitting to see a steam engine working very hard up the steep gradient replicating the golden age of steam. The engine was held up just before the climb and was on my mind whether a Hemerdon type climb could happen again, no chance. The engine sounded amazing, despite the odd bit of slipping she managed to roar up the bank without any trouble whatsoever. Even the sun came out to bask on the beautiful red (Crimson Lake) livery which made it even better. After a cracking start, it was off to Wales to see the loco tackling the 1 in 82 to 1 in 95 climb of Llanvihangel bank on the outskirts of Abergavenny in being hopeful that the engine would continue her brilliant form. I arrived in good time and had a great chat with a few of my mates which is always good company and had similar expectations of the climb. The engine was running a few mins late and low and behold the sun decided to go behind the clouds briefly as the engine came into view. The sound was as ever very good and she made mincemeat of the climb and her exhaust echoed through the trees and drowning the car noises in the background. Beautiful. Afterwards was Dinmore on the outskirts of Hereford, however the train was very slow and idling along plus the diesel was on the back of the train. After I got home, I had a report from a mate of mine that trespassers near Leominster was the reason behind the slow pass at Dinmore which really angered me as people should know better than to stand too close to the tracks. There’s no excuses for trespassing, end of story. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to like, comment and subscribe for more steam action from Full Steam Ahead.
