Grand Theft Auto 2 is often overlooked, but without it, the modern GTA franchise as we know it would not exist. In this retrospective, I explore how GTA 2 introduced the core elements that would go on to define open-world gaming, including satirical radio, a gang respect system, health, armour, vehicle modification, side missions, and a living city that reacts to your every move. Released in 1999, GTA 2 was a turning point for Rockstar Games. While it may not be as celebrated as GTA 3, it laid the groundwork for the formula that would make Grand Theft Auto a global phenomenon. Did you play GTA 2 back in the day?
