Watch as chefs in British Columbia provide health and safety tips to help you cook safely and prevent burns and scalds in the kitchen. Chefs, cooks, kitchen hands, and other workers in the food service industry are exposed to heat from flames or steam and are at risk of burns and scalds. This video demonstrates safe work procedures for working around heat, steam, and hot kitchen tools. It shows common hazards kitchen workers must be aware of and provides information on how to reduce the risk of burns and scalds from hot oil, steam, and kitchen tools. It also provides some tips for dealing with kitchen fires. What are 11 safety tips to prevent burns and scalds? 1. Use oven mitts or dry cloths when handling hot objects. 2. When checking the contents of a hot pot, lift the lid so it opens away from your body. 3. Put food into the pan using a motion away from your body. 4. Don't let handles extend over the edge of the stove or other burners. 5. Announce your presence if you're coming up behind someone with a hot pot or pan. 6. When resting hot pans, communicate this to others. 7. Be careful not to overheat oil. 8. In the event of an oil fire, turn off the gas and cover the flames with a fire-smothering blanket or damp cloth. 9. If there’s a large fire, use a wet chemical extinguisher. 10. Never use water to extinguish an oil fire. 11. Don't carry a burning pan.
