In December 2025, the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong in Assam witnessed a major law and order crisis sparked by protests over tribal land rights and alleged encroachments on protected grazing lands (PGR & VGR). The Times of India The unrest began when demands for eviction of alleged illegal settlers turned violent, leading to clashes between protestors and security forces. Reports include deaths of civilians, injuries to many security personnel, arson attacks on properties (including the house of a local council leader), and streets erupting in protest. India Today To control the situation, the Assam government imposed curfew-style restrictions and suspended internet services, and later even saw Army, RAF, and security deployments in the region. The Economic Times The crisis reflects deep-rooted tensions over land, identity, tribal autonomy under the Sixth Schedule, and governance challenges.
