Video about how to make a quartz crystal oscillator in the frequency band 16 MHz – 24 MHz (perhaps higher, try it, I did not have enough 27 MHz crystals to test it all out). Good property from the circuit: it oscillates easily and is super-sensitive. Example: when you remove the 220 uF capacitor and the 10 N capacitor that bridges it, it starts to oscillate on the frequency from the wiring, in my case 17 MHz, but it is unpredictable on which frequency it will oscillate in other (hobby shack) situations. These capacitors (220 uF with 10 N bridged) “kill” HF (parasitic) oscillations on the power supply lead. The 10 N capacitor that goes from emitter to ground (bridges the 2 paralleled resistors from 1 k, total resistance is 1000/2= 500 Ohms) is sometimes not necessary. But I found that with certain crystals the oscillation got a better sine wave shape. In general this capacitor is necessary. Equivalent transistor types from the BF 194 transistor can also work good, as long as their current amplification (Hfe) is enough. In this case my BF 194 measured a current amplification from 70, that is good. As far as I could see a typical High Frequency transistor is necessary here, I tested the BD 139 (transition frequency is 190 MHz) and the BC 547 b (the “always working” transistor), but the oscillator did not work very good with them, they caused the behaviour that the oscillator started to work on overtone frequencies from the crystal. Only with the BF 194 the circuit worked properly on the “ground’’ frequency from the crystal. A good equivalent for this circuit could be (based on my experience) the 2N2219 A.
