In this video, we can see how EU compliant cigarettes don't burn as long as non-EU compliant cigarettes. This is because it is known as a fire safe cigarette and, according to a European Commission proposal, must use fire-retardant paper. The test was carried out using fire retardant bedding to show how the risk of a fire spreading due to a discarded lit cigarette is significantly lower than it would be with normal bedding. For more information, see our blog post on the topic: Transcript This is attempting to simulate a carelessly discarded cigarette whilst a person is resting in bed. We are using two types of cigarette; EU-compliant cigarettes and non-EU compliant cigarettes. The non-compliant cigarettes and placed on the right-hand side of the bed, and the compliant on the left-hand side. Scientific tests conducted on upholstered furniture shows that the earliest recorded evidence for a burning, flaming fire to occur from a discarded cigarette is 22 minutes. In conclusion of this test, it is evident that the compliant cigarettes extinguished as expected and the non-compliant continued to burn for longer periods. The bedding performed well in both cases and certainly prevented fire spread.
