Taken on 6/24/18. Footage of an Orion VII OG Hybrid operating on a rerouted M55 bus from Times Square (7th Avenue & 41st Street) to South Ferry. Due to the NYC Pride March, many buses in Midtown, Chelsea, and the Village were rerouted, often with pretty large detours. The M55 fit under this, as it essentially made no regular stops on its route north of Chambers Street. The M55 normally runs between 44th Street & 6th Avenue and South Ferry, via 5th Avenue & Broadway (SB) or Church Street & 6th Avenue (NB). The M55 bus route on this day was relegated to stay on the West Side of Manhattan for most of the day. Buses from Times Square operated via 7th Avenue to 23rd Street, then via 11th Avenue into West Street (West Side Highway). From the moment it got onto the West Side Highway there was no stops that it could make until it gets off, which would be at Chambers Street. The bus then takes Chambers Street to Broadway, and resumes regular route to South Ferry. Since most people along 5th likely took the subway or made their way to the rerouted 5th Avenue route, much of nobody was taking the M55 during this period. So the bus was effectively an express from Times Square to Downtown Manhattan (on this trip to City Hall). Kudos to the bus operator for keeping it moving even with all the traffic. In subsequent years, the MTA decided to reroute the M55 via the east side, operating via 3rd Avenue & Bowery. However for the 2023 NYC Pride March, the M55 will be detoured back again on a similar route path via the West Side Highway into Downtown. However the fleet this time around is very different, as the Orion VII Hybrids and RTSs running at the time have since been retired. Now, the 2018 New Flyer XD40s and Nova Bus LFS HEVs dominate the standard local bus fleet. A rundown of this video will be provided soon. Thanks for watching! Like and subscribe for more content!
