For over a decade, ASLC scientists have maintained the longest-running year-round bird and marine mammal survey in Alaska, right here in Resurrection Bay. This unparalleled dataset offers a long-term view of species composition and abundance, helping researchers understand both normal seasonal cycles and unexpected changes. When the Pacific Marine Heatwave, known as “The Blob,” hit Alaska, these surveys didn’t stop. Thanks to consistent data before, during, and after the event, researchers can now evaluate how seabirds and marine mammals were affected in our area, and whether any impacts lingered. By continuing this work, scientists could potentially uncover warning signs to help us better prepare for future environmental events or changes. Join our flock of Seabird Stewards!
