Here is the Blackboard Quiz Generator discussed in the video: https://ed.oc.edu/blackboardquizgener... IMPORTANT: Do not include any additional information other than the questions and answers and the asterisk that identifies the right question (or the test will not load correctly. ---- Best Practices for Giving Online Tests There is no foolproof way to prevent cheating online, but there is also no way to prevent cheating in a classroom. When we think about cheating, we deal more in probabilities than certainties. Our goal is to minimizing the opportunity for students to cheat. Best practices include the following: 1. Enlarge the pool. If you have a 20 question test, it is harder to cheat if you draw from a pool of 50 or 100 questions. The larger the pool, the smaller the probability. 2. Randomize the questions. In Blackboard’s test options, you can check a box to randomize questions. No two students will see the test in the same order. If the pool is large enough, students may have entirely different tests. 3. Time the exam. It is hard to cheat when you are pressed for time. If you only have a minute per question, you don’t have a lot of time to Google the answer or copy the questions for others. 4. One at a time. Set the exam to give one question at a time. This makes it harder for students to share the exam with friends. 5. Don’t be Lazy. This is important. If you use the questions directly from the textbook’s test bank, unethical but enterprising students will find them online (e.g., Course Hero). Revise the questions by changing names and places. Alter the math. Make it difficult for students to cheat. 6. Use the Respondus Lockdown Browser. This is not foolproof, but if students cannot move off of the testing screen, it makes it more difficult to cheat. 7. Only release test Results after the due date: Do not let them see test results until after all students have taken the test. This is just a simple setting issue. You want them to see what they got right and what they got wrong, but not in time to share the answers with others. 8. Embrace open book exams. This is controversial in some quarters, but if you have an open book exam with only one minute per question, they may only be able to look up a couple of questions before time runs out. 4 Comments These educational tutorials are to help instructors be more effective with technology.
