The culmination of 9 months of extensive engineering and planning, in October of 2016, Bigge executed the transport of a crude tower, central to refinery processes at a petroleum facility off Puget Sound in Washington. Fabricated in Seattle, the tower was loaded onto a 260 foot long barge. With a gross transport weight of over 300 tons, the 100 plus mile journey was made in approximately 14 hours. Measuring 177 feet in length with a 17 foot diameter, the primary equipment used to transport the tower consisted of 16 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters. Careful coordination of our procedures were necessary in order to offload the barge while compensating for tidal influence. Among our goals was to ensure no impact to the environment. On the beach used for the landing, each log was meticulously cataloged and returned to its original location after our roll-off operation. Timing was an important factor, hitting our goal within the tidal window allowed us to keep the barge entirely afloat, leaving intact the eel grass that blankets the beach face below the water's surface. Two of Bigge's winch trucks, serving as a mooring source on the beach, were strategically placed to control the stable positioning of the barge. With the assistance of two forklifts and a 90 ton rough terrain crane from our fleet, a 120' bridge from our inventory was constructed, paving the way for the final leg of the transport to the refinery.
