Oceanus and Tethys: the Sources of all Freshwater (Greek Mythology)

Oceanus and his wife Tethys served as the masters of the Earth's waters during the period of Titan rule. Together they would go on to give birth to innumerable amounts of deities that would each become the personification of every river, spring, and every other body of freshwater in the world. Their daughters would become the wives and consorts of some of the most important and famous figures of Greek mythology, including Zeus himself. Their sons would wrestle Heracles and give rise to several important royal families. And yet Oceanus and Tethys always remained personally neutral in the conflicts of their fellow deities. Oceanus was content with serving as the River that surrounds the Earth and his River served as the barrier between Man and the mythological. From that River all freshwater on Earth would flow and the Sun, Moon, and Stars would be guided in their rotation around the Earth. But how did Oceanus remain free while many of his fellow Titans were imprisoned? Why is he one of the most important Titans in Greek Mythology? And what did Tethys do during all of this?
