Lee Health Pediatric Audiologist Dr. Alicia Moore said middle ear problems are very common in young children. “Just because of the anatomy of their head, their head is smaller.” Middle ear problems are often caused by fluid buildup behind the eardrum, “And just the eardrum not moving properly because of the fluid or station tube problems, which is the tube that runs from the ear to the throat and it doesn’t equalize the pressure properly,” said Dr. Moore. In some cases, it can cause a speech delay. Sometimes it can cause pain, however, “A lot of the time kids don’t have any symptoms with otitis media, and then they come in here and it turns out oh that’s why they’re not talking, because they’ve been having middle ear problems,” said Dr. Moore. If they have middle ear problems, it’s important that they are seen by a doctor. “Then the child is not hearing all of the speech sounds, which can cause a speech delay, so that’s why it’s really important to make sure any middle ear problems are taken care of as soon as possible to prevent any kind of speech delay,” said Dr. Moore. An audiologist like Dr. Moore can run tests to determine what’s causing the hearing problem and provide the right treatment. “If you have a nerve damage hearing loss, then the only solution for that is hearing aids. If you have a middle ear related hearing loss, then usually it’s correctable with tubes or medication.” The good news is many middle ear problems are temporary. Speak with your child’s doctor if you have concerns about their hearing.
