On August 28th, the Church honors Saint Augustine, bishop, doctor, and one of Christianity’s greatest thinkers. Once a seeker lost in worldly pleasures and the Manichaean heresy, Augustine’s powerful conversion—brought about through the prayers of his mother St. Monica and the influence of St. Ambrose—became a turning point in Christian history. As bishop of Hippo, Augustine battled heresies like Manichaeism, Donatism, and Pelagianism, defending the truth of divine grace with unmatched eloquence, logic, and compassion. His monumental work, The City of God, contrasted the love of self with the love of God, shaping theology for centuries. Known for humility, charity, and tireless preaching, he lived a life of prayer, poverty, and service until his death in 430, during the Vandal siege of Hippo.
