Our project dealt with one of the most controversial topics in today’s society, with that being said, we are so thankful that Sarah Harris a PhD student, TA for biology 311c, and a graduate research assistant at UT was able to contribute her time and knowledge to our project. From the beginning of our project we were challenged by the lack of information regarding perspectives from current students or past students on racism on the campus at UT and covid-19 made it impossible for us to interact with current students. Regardless of the current circumstances, we were able to gather useful information and it was overall a very interesting experience. The most interesting part of our research was getting to know and interview Sarah Harris. She is part of the TIP program which is a program dedicated to help first generation students, due to this, it is a very diverse program. A very interesting point she made was that although she does see diversity in our campus, almost all the time there is a division among ethnic groups, for instance, there is organizations for Latinos, African Americans, Asians, etc. there is always a division. This has taken a new approach to our research that being that even if UT has created a more diverse environment for students many of them interact with people who they feel more comfortable with instead of making more connections with people who are different from them. This creates a big issue because the whole point of a diverse environment is to learn from each other. A solution to this problem would be to have a class or organization where students share their culture and experiences with each other without feeling judged or attacked. Another interesting finding to our project was the Fisher vs UT case. Many of the people we talked to about this were very surprised that this case went all the way to the supreme court. We loved how UT stood out for minorities. The issue of our project keeps us up at night. Racism is a serious problem and affects everyone at some point in their life if everyone were to be more accepting this would not be a problem.
