Spartanburg, South Carolina is the 12th largest City in South Carolina with a population of a little more than 37,000 residents. The Greenville Spartanburg Anderson area has a little less than 1.4 million residents which consist of 10 counties in the north of the State and is called " The Upstate". Spartanburg is 30 miles east of Greenville, 98 miles northwest of Columbia, and 80 miles west of Charlotte, NC. Spartanburg was formed in 1785 and was named after a local militia called the Spartan Regiment in the American Revolutionary War. The Spartan Regiment was commanded by Andrew Pickens - for which Pickens, South Carolina is named after. In 1831 - Spartanburg was incorporated and later become known as the "Hub City" - railroad lines radiated from the City forming the shape of a whhel hub. Later one in the late 19th century - Spartanburg became a center for textile manufacturing. Spartanburg has a lot to offer for tourist and residents that live there or close by.
