Admont is an Austrian market town in the north of Upper Styria in Austria. It is one of the oldest settlements in Styria. The first mention can be found in 859 as Ademundi vallis. The name means odmot (deep place in a river, whirlpool) in Proto-Slavic. The famous Benedictine monastery of Admont was founded in 1074. It is the oldest existing monastery in Styria. In 1776 the baroque monastic library was completed. Often referred to as the eighth wonder of the world in the past, it is the world's largest monastic book hall. The monastery's entire book inventory includes around 200,000 volumes and over 1,400 valuable manuscripts. More than half come from the Middle Ages. Admont ist eine österreichische Marktgemeinde im Norden der Obersteiermark in Österreich. Es ist eine der ältesten Siedlungen der Steiermark. Die erste Nennung findet man aus dem Jahr 859 als Ademundi vallis. Der Name bedeutet auf urslawisch odmot (tiefe Stelle in einem Fluss, Strudel). Die Gründung des berühmten Benediktinerstiftes Admont erfolgte im Jahre 1074. Es ist das älteste bestehende Kloster der Steiermark. Im Jahr 1776 wurde die barocke klösterliche Stiftsbibliothek fertiggestellt. Sie wurde in der Vergangenheit oft als achtes Weltwunder bezeichnet und ist der weltweit größte klösterliche Büchersaal. Der gesamte Bücherbestand des Stiftes umfasst ca 200.000 Bände und über 1.400 wertvolle Handschriften. Mehr als die Hälfte stammen aus dem Mittelalter.
