In this episode of Bosch TechNuggets, we're talking about the correct heat range of spark plugs. This describes how well a spark plug can dissipate the heat generated in the combustion chamber to the cylinder head. The spark plug must operate within a specific temperature range to function optimally. If the spark plug is too cold, carbon deposits form on the ceramic, which can lead to a short circuit. The engine runs rough, may consume more fuel, and might eventually stop running altogether. A too-high spark plug temperature leads to increased wear and thus a significantly shorter servie life of the spark plug. The electrodes begin to glow, which can cause uncontrolled ignition. If the spark plug gets even hotter, this leads to melting of the ceramic and burnout of the electrodes. The consequence is then engine damage. That's why it's so important to use the manufacturer's recommended spark plug. Only then is the optimal temperature ensured. The heat range is part of the type formula stamped on every spark plug.
