Goshiwons, also known as Korean-style dormitories, are small living spaces typically found near universities or popular districts in South Korea. They are often rented by students or young professionals who are looking for affordable accommodation in the city. There are different types of goshiwon but generally they are the same communal kitchen and maybe hall way with seats and the worst with shared toilets, but the most sort after ones are with good facilities and with good locations. Sometimes theres a waiting lists for the best ones up to a 2 years. Thats why you hear goshiwon are bad because most are not the ones you want. Most are cheap hotels dressed up as goshiwon. However, living in a Goshiwon can be a nightmare. The small rooms are often cramped, with just enough space for a bed, desk, and a small cabinet. The walls are paper-thin, so you can hear your neighbors' every move, from their coughs to their snoring. According to a report by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, there were over 430,000 Goshiwon residents in South Korea in 2017. In korea every 11 person, one is living in single room tight spaces in the city call Goshiwons. But the real problem with Goshiwons lies in their lack of privacy. Since the rooms are so small, there is no space for a private bathroom or even a kitchenette. Instead, residents must share communal bathrooms and kitchens with other tenants. This can lead to hygiene issues and even conflict between roommates. Furthermore, the communal areas are often poorly maintained, with dirty dishes left in the sink and overflowing trash cans. The shared bathrooms are often in a state of disrepair, with broken tiles and leaky faucets. The lack of basic amenities and maintenance can lead to a poor living experience for tenants. Living in a Goshiwon can also take a toll on one's mental health. The constant noise and lack of privacy can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of isolation and anxiety. Some tenants report feeling like they are living in a prison, with no escape from the cramped living conditions. Despite the many challenges of living in a Goshiwon, many residents continue to choose this option due to its affordability and convenience. However, it is important to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks and consider alternative living arrangements if possible. while Goshiwons may offer an affordable option for those looking to live in the heart of the city, the lack of privacy, hygiene issues, and poor maintenance can make it a challenging living experience. It's important to consider all options before committing to living in a Goshiwon. What use to be the use of doshiwons as study rooms for hard woking students also slowley turn out to be accommodation for low paid workers. Which in turn stops them going to streets. This is also one of the main point of some of the doshiwons. cheap hotel owners turned their places to doshiwon to confuse the public and gain more tenents, that why some places are in bad conditions and not so good location. Mixed in with the fact that single middle aged men with low wages who smoke or drink. But things have not changed at the worst goshiwons. since there are better living conditions at some goshiwon it will at a cost to the renter, you can have a window or a toilet in your room but that adds more to the total cost to your rent. Yes most goshiwon have improved near schools because of government laws since 1980s.
