The Whitaker family started a tobacco plantation during the 1740s on the land that would later be known as the town of Whitakers, NC. A railroad was introduced in the 1850s, and with the mix of new folks traveling through town, and the wealthy tobacco farmers looking to spend their money, at one time, this town had the ability to support its community with an abundance of stores , banks, downtown storefronts. The town peak population was in 1960, with 1006 residents residing in this railroad town. Since then, the towns population has dipped to half of that, and today, I go investigate the town for its past history that is still remaining . Whether its the multiple banks with vaults, or the amount of homes left abandoned, this town is in the middle of a huge change and I'm here to document its beauty before it is altered forever, or hopefully revitalized! Also, there's more history at the end of the video explaining a little bit more about the town.
