The Piaristenkirche (also known as Maria Treu Kirche, the Church of Mary the Faithful) is a notable Baroque church in the the 8th District (Josefstadt) of Vienna, Austria. It was founded in the early 1700s by the Piarist Order, and designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The twin towers were not part of the original design but were added in the mid-1800s. The church was the scene of several historically important musical events. It was here that Joseph Haydn's Missa in Tempore Belli (Mass in Time of War; sometimes also known as the Paukenmesse, ["timpani mass") was first performed, on December 26, 1796. On November 21, 1961, Anton Bruckner (who had not yet composed any of his symphonies) passed his practical composition examination with a performance on the church's organ; Johann Herbeck, one of Vienna's leading musical figures, reacted to Bruckner's performance with the words, "It was he who should have been examining us."
