On September 12, 2000, 26-year-old Andrew “Andy” Moore was found murdered inside his ground-floor apartment on 8th Avenue in San Diego, California. He had been bludgeoned and stabbed while sleeping in his own bed. There were no signs of forced entry. The deadbolt was locked. And his motorcycle, one of his prized possessions, was missing. What happened inside Andy’s small studio apartment that weekend has haunted detectives for 25 years. Andy had moved to San Diego from Pennsylvania, drawn by the city’s energy and a close relationship with his Uncle Paul. He was attending college, working at a restaurant, and building a life filled with friends and independence. But sometime between Friday, September 8 and Tuesday, September 12, 2000, someone entered his apartment and attacked him with extreme violence. Investigators discovered that the phone and answering machine had been unplugged and moved, and his motorcycle was later found abandoned a mile away. DNA was recovered from his bedding, but has never matched anyone in CODIS. Over the years, detectives have examined multiple suspects, including a volatile former neighbor, a man who appeared obsessively attached to Andy, and even a convicted serial killer whose crimes overlapped in time and geography. Each lead has been investigated, but none have resulted in an arrest. Now, with new forensic advancements and renewed attention from San Diego Police Department Detective Tracey Barr, the case may be closer than ever to a breakthrough. In this episode of The Deck, Ashley Flowers unpacks the strange layout of Andy’s apartment building, the unanswered questions surrounding the bathroom airshaft, the missing answering machine calls, and the DNA evidence that could finally identify the person responsible. If you know anything about the murder of Andrew “Andy” Moore in San Diego, California shortly before September 12, 2000, call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or Detective Barr’s desk phone at 619-430-0134. There is a $56,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest and conviction.
