Trail : Red Rock Parkway and Canyon Date : Feb 14th 2026 Location : Waterton lakes National park Trailhead location : Since Red Rock parkway is closed in winter, we started from the parking lot located at the beginning of the parkway Distance : 29.8 km Elevation gain : 606 m Starting time : 7h39 Total time to complete: 6h22 Difficulty: Hard (just because of distance), would be easy otherwise Trail traffic : NONE! Park pass needed : Park Canada discovery pass/or daily entry pass On this Valentine’s Day, we had our sights set on a mountain summit, Table mountain, but with ferocious winds in the forecast, we chose wisdom over ego and stayed low. Instead, we headed back to Red Rock Canyon, a place we had explored in the busy summer months. Revisiting it in winter felt like the perfect plan… we knew we would have the place to ourselves, because honestly, who else would hike 30 km under 55–60 km/h wind gusts? 🫠😂 Sure, biking in would’ve been the “smart” move, but without our bikes, and with gusting winds and light snow swirling around us, hiking felt just right. And we have zero regrets… well, except maybe our legs. 😂 From start to finish, the open views of the surrounding peaks were absolutely breathtaking. And the canyon itself… just wow. Those bright red rocks, the quiet bridges, the frozen waterfalls clinging to the rock, it felt like heaven on earth. Having the entire place to ourselves made it even more surreal. On the way back, we laughed and said, “We hiked 30 km and only saw a few deer…” 😞 and as if the day wanted the perfect ending, a beautiful, healthy coyote emerged from the bush. Calm, confident, completely unbothered. He crossed the road right in front of us, then wandered slowly into the open field, disappearing in front of us. Pure magic. The icing on the cake. Waterton Lakes National Park will always hold a special place in our hearts, and once again, it did not disappoint.
