Various of soldiers patrolling near Turkish-Iraqi border STORYLINE: Residents of a Turkish town near the border with northern Iraq held a demonstration on Saturday against the Kurdistan Workers' Party, also known as the PKK. The protest in Sirnak (in the province of the same name) came just days after the Turkish military said on its Website that more than 30 rebels had been killed. The PKK have denied any casualties, calling the military statement a lie, according the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency. Turkish officials have been frustrated by the failure of both US forces in Iraq and Iraqi forces to stop the Kurdish separatist attacks, which have claimed 42 lives in Turkey this month alone. Hasim Babat, the leader of a pro-government civilian security force known as the Village Guard spoke at the demonstration, telling the crowd that the PKK "have burned villages, burned schools, killed teachers." Babat said the had done this "because they can only convince ignorant people to join them at the mountains". On Saturday morning, AP Television filmed soldiers on foot patrols in Sirnak province as military activity continued near the border with Iraq. However on Friday, Turkey's top military commander was quoted as saying Ankara will wait until Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visits Washington in November before deciding on a cross-border offensive into northern Iraq. Erdogan will meet US President George W. Bush in Washington on November 5. The Bush administration has said repeatedly that the border crisis should be resolved through diplomacy. A regional summit of foreign ministers will be held next week in Istanbul, to discuss Iraq. The Turkish Parliament last week authorised the government to send its troops into northern Iraq to hit bases of the PKK. Washington is opposed to a unilateral military move by its NATO ally, fearing it could destabilise Iraq's north.
