Local eye cancer survivor suggests few simple steps to protect your eyes

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A local woman has an important warning about a few simple steps that you can take to save your eyes. Nancy Brown is a nurse who works with a team of health care providers at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute. After her own diagnosis that could have lost her her sight, she is sharing an important message about a few steps that you can take to protect your own eyes. "I am an artist. I do portraits, and the eyes are the windows to the soul," said Nancy Brown. Just about a year ago, Nancy noticed a brown speck in her right eye was growing. So, Dr. Zelia Correa not only examined her eyes, but she made the decision to "biopsy it," or test it for cancer. The cells found in the biopsy are a rare cancer in the eye. Nancy had an "iris melanoma." Dr. Zelia Correa, a UC Ocular Oncologist, explained, "and what that is, is a primary melanoma on the inside of the eye." To make sure it didn't spread, she performed a delicate surgery. "I re-sected the tumor and I repaired her iris," said Dr. Correa. Nancy said, "The bonus part of all this was that my eye was okay." She can now see clearly. Along with her medical team, she wants you to do two things to save your own sight. Nancy explained, "First thing is that the annual dilated eye exam is very important. Number two is that if you have any questions, you should always have a second opinion with an eye MD." You are most at risk for this if you have fair skin, light eyes, and a family history of this eye cancer. Sunglasses are good for your eyes, and help protect in a lot of ways, but aren't the only step you should take for protection against this cancer.
