On May 14, 2022, at 3:47 A.M., Corporal Grant Hofferica of the Wildwood Crest Police Department saw a 2011 Nissan Rogue driving west onto Forget-me-not Road after failing to stop at a red light at Rosemary Road and New Jersey Avenue. The car turned onto Park Boulevard to the north, and he engaged the traffic stop by turning on his emergency lights. Corporal Hofferica spoke with the motorist, identified as 21-year-old Gianna, once she came to a halt. When Gianna was requested to produce her paperwork, she showed cards that showed her grandfather, who was a retired Gloucester Township police officer, and her family friend, who was a state trooper. While speaking with her, Corporal Hofferica noticed an alcohol stench. Gianna acknowledged drinking alcohol earlier that evening and stated she was on her way home. Another officer showed up to help while he went back to his patrol car to verify her documents. Corporal Hofferica requested Gianna to get out of the car and complete field sobriety exams because he thought she might be impaired. The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test was the initial exercise. Corporal Hofferica noted three things during the HGN test: no smooth pursuit, definite and continuous nystagmus at maximum deviation, and nystagmus that started before 45 degrees. The Walk and Turn test was the second exercise. Gianna took the wrong amount of steps and failed to touch heel to toe on every stride throughout the Walk and Turn test. Welcome to ProtectWatchCam!
