Dr. Dave Ullman spoke at the EAA AirVenture 2023 Forum on July 26, 2023, on the topic of "Electric Airplanes, hype" and left the audience to determine if the an "!" or "?" should be added to the title of the session. "Electric propulsion will change what airplanes look like and how they will fly. In this talk, I explore answers to the following questions: Will the current eVTOL concepts change aviation? Will you be able to pull out your IC engine and replace it with an electric motor any time soon? What is the promise for distributed electric propulsion?" Dr. Ullman also spoke about his work developing Electric Lift Augmenting Slats (ELAS) with Cub Crafters under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funded program. ELAS is an eSTOL technology that combines leading-edge slats with a series of small electric ducted fans (EDFs) accelerating the air between the slat and the airfoil. Speaker David G. Ullman has been a pilot and EAA member for 30+ years and is former president of Chapter 292. He holds degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He has built a Velocity and a Jabiru-like airplane. He is an expert on product design and holds eight patents. He has been a regular speaker at the VFS Electric Aircraft Symposium and in 2018 he was the keynote speaker at the Sustainable Aviation Symposium in San Francisco with his talk on “Electric Air Vehicle Performance Prospects”.
