Here we quickly go through etching with aquatint, or aquatint etching. In a regular etching, the artist creates lines that are etched into a copper plate. To create shading, you can, for example, make many lines close together. Aquatint expands the possibilities of the etching technique - by laying a grid of grains on the plate, you can create shades of grey over larger areas of the plate. We have followed Mikael Wahrby, Swedish printmaking artist, former teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in intaglio printmaking, who shows us how to work with aquatint.
