Why do antique diamonds sparkle so differently from modern stones? In this 4-minute video, jewellery historian Zuleika Gerrish of Parkin & Gerrish explores the fascinating relationship between light and the way gemstones were cut, from Georgian candlelight to Victorian gaslight, the arrival of electric lighting, and finally modern laser cutting. Antique diamonds were not cut for spotlights or jewellery counters. They were shaped by hand, cleaved, sawn, and polished to perform in the flicker of a candle, the glow of gaslight, and the soft white light of early electricity. Old mine cuts, old European cuts, and transitional cuts each belong to a specific moment in lighting history. As we ring in the New Year, this feels like the perfect moment to reflect on how jewels have witnessed centuries of midnight celebrations — long before modern light existed. ✨ Happy New Year 2026 and thank you for celebrating antique jewellery, history, and craftsmanship with me.
