Thermal and magnetic tripping: AC breakers typically use a combination of thermal and magnetic tripping mechanisms. Thermal tripping is activated by prolonged overload, while magnetic tripping is activated by sudden, high-current surges. DC Breakers : Constant flow: DC current flows in one direction only. No zero-crossing: There are no moments when the current is zero. Arc extinction challenges: It is more difficult to extinguish arcs in DC circuits because there is no natural zero-crossing point. Magnetic tripping only: DC breakers primarily rely on magnetic tripping mechanisms to detect and interrupt excessive currents.
