Minden is a city with 81,000 inhabitants in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. The station was opened in 1848 as the terminus of the Cologne-Minden Railway Company with the Hamm(Westf) - Minden(Westf) railway and the Hanoverian State Railway with the Minden(Westf) - Hanover railway. The tracks from Hamm were on the west side of the entrance building and the tracks from Hanover on the east side. Despite this division between two different railway companies, the station was a through station from the start. Until 1866 it was still a border station between Prussia and Hanover. With the annexation of Hanover by Prussia in 1866, this function was eliminated and the journey from Cologne to Berlin was now possible without border controls. The railway line to Nienburg(Weser) was added in 1928. Due to the Minden port, the freight depot also grew over time. After the Second World War, the newly founded Bundesbahn-Zentralamt, today's DB Systemtechnik, was located in Minden. The site is east of the passenger station and has a connection to the area of ​​the former depot. With the start of electrical operations in 1968, the Minden depot became superfluous and was demolished in 1969. In the meantime, a small forest has grown on the area within the station that has been fallow to this day. Due to the port and the routes of the Mindener Kreisbahn, the freight yard is still in active use today. In the south-east of the station there is a loading ramp for the Bundeswehr, which is also still in use. The old entrance building is still used by DB today and still houses a bakery, a travel center and toilets. A total of five platform tracks are available. Four of these are continuous tracks and one is a terminal track that can only be reached by trains coming from the Hanover/Nienburg direction. In addition to local trains, intercity trains on the Berlin - Amsterdam and Cologne - Dresden lines also stop at Minden station.
