Cocora Valley is home to Colombia's national tree: the wax palm, the world's tallest species of palm tree. It is also the birthplace of Marino Toro, a guide of the region who show tourists around and try to raise their awareness of the ecological importance of the site. For many years, palm trees used to be over-exploited for making irrigation channels. Thankfully, the species is now protected, so no one is allowed to chop the trees down or remove the wax.
