This is the second novel in McCarthy's BORDER TRILOGY. The story itself concerns Billy and Boyd and three crossings from America into Mexico and back before and during WWII; however, we'll see that Billy, the protagonist, is actually at war with his own metaphysical country that transcends boundaries, and ultimately, he's at war with himself. This marks the fifth McCarthy analysis we've covered here. This book, even more than the others, conveys the postmodern desolation of which McCarthy's Speakers sing. In fact, this work contains dark elements from the others, as well as adept allusions to OEDIPUS REX; THE ODYSSEY; Ted Hughes; Sylvia Plath; Roman mythology; and the archetypal American Western. I'll explore the subtleties of the language in the narrative and how the Speaker takes the Reader into a dreamscape bordering on oracular dreamquest.
