Šumadija - Vodnjan, Trip Home 2018

Performing Šumadija in Vodnjan at our fifth concert on our highly successful tour of Croatia and Serbia 2018. ŠUMADIJA Šumadija in central Serbia, is an area of rich agriculture and rolling hills. This choreography is representative of a dance style from the “polje” or fields, with different style steps, and more intricate footwork than some of the other dances. In this area, dance was used as a way of bringing people together. Imagine a time and place where, without folklore, without dance, without this sort of outlet, young people really wouldn’t have much chance to be together – certainly not at close quarters, to hold hands or touch each other. And that is true of all folklore dances from our region – they were a way of bringing young people together. And isn’t it wonderful to see them still doing that. Šumadija is beautiful, it’s dazzling – and it’s quite intricate. It is probably our most difficult choreography to perform but the hard work in practice pays off in the visually pleasing result.
