Navy has successfully competed Exercise Black Carillon 23, the annual submarine search and rescue exercise off the coast of Western Australia, along with international observers from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Navy’s submarine abandonment, escape and rescue system has been certified for another year as part of Exercise Black Carillon 23, which ran between 13-24 February 2023. The system is based around a submersible vehicle, provide by the industry partner JFD, designed to be transported by sea, land or air to locate a disabled submarine and rescue its crew. The system requires Navy personnel and private companies to work together each year in Exercise Black Carillon to prove that they can meet the appropriate requirements and conduct a submarine search and rescue operation at short notice. Navy’s submarine search and rescue operates within the global, international Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office where member nations can call upon each other for assistance in the event of a submarine search and rescue operation.
