In this video, I take a common natural material—wood—and extract potassium nitrate (KNO₃), a key ingredient in fertilizers, fireworks, and rocket fuel. Using simple chemistry techniques, I demonstrate how to convert wood ash into a purified form of KNO₃ through a series of chemical processes. 🔬 Step-by-Step Process in This Video: ✅ Burning Wood: Extracting minerals from wood by combustion, leaving behind ash rich in potassium carbonate. ✅ Water Extraction: Dissolving potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃) from the ash using water while removing insoluble impurities. ✅ Gravitational Filtration: Using a simple cotton thread method to separate dissolved potassium salts from solid residues. ✅ Chemical Conversion: Reacting potassium carbonate with dilute nitric acid (HNO₃) to form potassium nitrate: K₂CO₃ + 2HNO₃ → 2KNO₃ + CO₂ + H₂O ✅ pH Testing: Using pH paper to confirm the reaction—from alkaline (blue) to neutral (green). ✅ Crystallization: Boiling the solution to evaporate water and obtain pure KNO₃ crystals. ✅ Testing Combustion: Mixing KNO₃ with sugar to make a simple solid rocket fuel and attempting ignition. 🚀 Will the Rocket Fly? The final step is testing homemade rocket fuel made from our extracted KNO₃. Will it launch or just burn? Watch the full experiment to find out! 🧪 Why This Experiment Matters? Extracting chemicals from natural sources using basic chemistry. Demonstrating purification techniques like filtration and crystallization. Understanding chemical reactions behind potassium nitrate production. Exploring the combustion properties of oxidizers like KNO₃. 🔥 If you love chemistry and DIY experiments, don’t forget to LIKE, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE!
