All guides, reviews, and other info on cigars at Bespoke Unit: https://bespokeunit.com/cigars Davidoff Escurio Cigar Review: The Discovery Pillar's Sweet Finish Here at the Saga Restaurant in Santiago, Dominican Republic, we're covering the Davidoff Escurio. We're looking at the Corona Gorda, a thinner, elongated format. Escurio is a primarily Brazilian blend, with some Dominican tobacco to balance it out. The name itself is something Davidoff came up with, combining "oscuro" and "Rio"—Escurio. This is because the inspiration is a night in Rio: light, fun, playful, spicy, sweet, with some curves! The blend is therefore an interpretation of this in tobacco form. We are currently towards the end of our meal here at Saga. At the beginning, we had the Nicaragua, while towards the middle we had the Yamasá. Hence, the Nicaragua brought peppers and spice, going into leather and earthy tones with the Yamasá. Now, with the Escurio, we find floral notes and sweetness. This complements desserts well, which is why we saved it for the end of the meal. It also goes nicely with spicy liqeurs like the Sambuca we has as a digestif. What we've done here is burned the Sambuca so that the anise and sweetness really come out. In the cigar itself, the sweetness originates from the Cubra tobacco. The name Cubra is another portmanteau, alluding to Cuban seeds brought to Brazil. In terms of thirds, you'll find less change throughout the smoke, since it's a milder cigar in general. It's a noble sweet that covers the palate. As mentioned earlier, there's some spiciness, but it's not a hot pepper kind of spice, but rather, more floral. There are some woody notes, but milder than those in the Yamasá; more like a cedar. Dominican tobaccos round out the back and the sides. However, the main feature is the sweetness of the Cubra, and the spiciness of the Mata Fina. The latter is another Brazilian tobacco with a Cuban origin; both are from the Bahia region. This is the most approachable of the Discovery line, if you're already familiar with the core Davidoff lines. Escurio has a nice, playful profile, a perfect introduction to the Discovery Pillar. Further, the Corona Gorda is a nice, elegant vitola in which to try the blend. Escurio also comes in Petit Robusto, Robusto, & Gran Toro. The Petit Robusto is 3½ in. This smaller shape has more spice, while the bigger ring gauges have more sweetness. A smaller Perfecto shape is currently available in Europe. The Escurio blend has been available since 2015.
