Night drives in Uttarakhand forests are not just about thrill and wildlife sightings anymore — they have become a space for uncomfortable conversations. During this night drive, I discuss a disturbing news report: Uttarakhand Forest Department planning to distribute iron spike collars to women as a protection measure against leopard attacks. As a wildlife storyteller and someone who has closely followed human–leopard conflict in the Himalayas, I strongly feel this is NOT a good decision. Putting iron spike collars on women: Shifts the burden of safety from the system to the victim Normalises fear as a way of life Treats women like prey instead of protecting habitats and villages Fails to address the real reasons behind leopard attacks Leopards are not villains — bad planning, shrinking forests, stray cattle, broken corridors, and weak ground-level protection systems are. In this video, we talk about: • Why leopard attacks are increasing in Uttarakhand • Why iron spike collars are a symbolic but dangerous solution • Psychological impact on hill women • What REAL mitigation should look like • Lessons from past human-wildlife conflict failures This night drive is not just through dark roads — it’s through dark decisions, misplaced priorities, and uncomfortable truths. If we start putting iron around human necks instead of fixing forest policy, we have already lost the battle. Watch till the end. Think. Question. Discuss. — Narration & Discussion: Vivek Awasthi #NightDrive #Uttarakhand #LeopardConflict #HumanWildlifeConflict #ForestPolicy #WomenSafety #LeopardAttack #WildlifeConservation #GroundReality #Jungle #VivekAwasthi
